We spend most of our time in the kitchen cleaning and cooking.  This article is all about cleaning the kitchen, and the tips that can save you time and make life easier for you.

1. When burnt food residue has stuck onto your stainless steel pots and pans after cooking, this is the trick to easily remove them:  Put some water in the pot or pan, then let it boil.  It will only take a few minutes since the water is very little.  Once the water boils, bring the pot or pan to the sink, scrub a bit with a handheld scrubber and rinse it off with soap and water.  The hot water will easily remove the food residue.  This will save you lots of time cleaning the stainless steel pot or pan.
2. To clean the kitchen floor, make use of a vacuum cleaner.  This is not the regular kind of vacuum used for carpets, but a vacuum specifically meant for floors.  The one I use is the Swiffer Sweeper Vacuum.  It’s very light and easy to use, and will pick up dirt and everything else in a matter of seconds.  Another very useful gadget is a portable floor steam mop.  It removes all the dirt residue on the floor, even the sticky ones, and leaves the floor clean and shiny.  I recommend the vacuum and steam mop because they are wonderful time savers!

When baking, line the pan with aluminum foil whenever possible.  This way you just need to discard the foil after baking and there’s no need to wash the pan.  For food that will stick to aluminum foil, I use parchment paper instead.  Same thing with baking cupcakes and muffins.  Line the pans with paper cups so you will not need to wash the pans afterwards.
4. Have a waste can within easy reach and one that does not require opening doors.  If you need to open the door under the sink 10 times a day to throw something, that’s equivalent to 70 times a week or 3650 times a year.  That’s a lot of time wasted!
5. If your microwave has dried residue, one of the fastest ways to clean it is to let a cup of water boil in the microwave first.  The steam will loosen the residue and this will enable you to easily wipe the residue off.

You can easily install a shower door on your own with a few tools and some free time on hand. The materials for shower door installation would cost between $300 and $500. As long as you are completely focused on the job at hand, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to install a new shower door on your own.

First, make sure that you have the right sized door. Measure the size of your enclosure and if you are installing a swinging door, measure how far the nearest obstacles are to your door opening.  Once you have all the right materials, the first thing that you will install is the base track.  This helps to keep water out and your door in place.  Cut the base track to the length of the shower opening and install it at the center of the shower
’s lip.  Mark its location just in case it slips during the rest of the process.

The next step in shower door installation is to install the vertical jambs.  Use a level to make sure they are at a 90 degree angle with the base track. If you are installing a swinging door, you will install the hinge side track first; if it is a sliding door, you have to do both catch jambs.  In order to ensure that your jambs stay fast as you start to drill into the wall, mark the screw holes with a pencil when the jamb is in place.  Then use an awl or punch to chip the glaze of the tile so that your drill will go in easily. Drill the holes, tap in plastic anchors and then screw your jambs to the wall.

Next to hang your shower door.  For a swinging door, make sure that it is hinged to swing out and slide that side into the hinge track.  Use a level to make sure that your shower door is hanging properly. Unless your walls are warped, you should have about ½ inch of wiggle room around the jamb.  Once everything is level, screw the door hinge into the hinge track.  If it is a sliding doors, you should be able to slide the doors into their wall tracks.  Again, you may have to make small adjustments if your walls are not properly aligned.

Once your doors and side jambs are in place, the last step of shower door installation is to put in the header.  It should be in alignment with the two side jambs and screwed into place.  Keep the door open during this part of the installation to make sure it doesn’t interfere with your plumb line.  Once the major components of your shower door are in place, you can install the handle, door framing, and drip rail.  Finish the shower installation project with waterproofed caulk.

Avoid rubbing copper items when cleaning them since this can remove the thin coat of lacquer which has been applied to them for protection and to maintain their shine.

For lacquered items only dust them with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with a mild detergent and warm water. Then rinse and buff dry with a clean, soft cloth.

For lacquered copper items be sure to use a commercial copper cleaner that you rub off instead of wash off. This kind of method makes its easier to clean the handles and locks.

You can also try making your own cleaning by creating a paste made of equal parts salt and flour moistened with white vinegar. Leave this on until it fully dries. Rinse well with cold water and polish dry with a soft cloth.

If your item hasn’t been lacquered, you might want to spray or brush two coats of a transparent metal lacquer on the piece to avoid tarnishing.

- Any unwanted heterotrophic bacteria, that causes water quality problems and fish health problems is removed from the water before it has a chance to contaminate the pond.

- The particulate matter does not have a chance to come into contact with the Japanese matting and is therefore unable to block the openings in the matting, resulting in the extremely large surface area being maintained.

I have in this article so far discussed the benefits of vortex filtration. There are however some disadvantages for the average pond keeper with a small to medium sized fish pond, up to 1000 gallons (US):

- They are designed for use in large ponds by Koi professionals and will probably be over kill for the majority of smaller fish ponds. For those pond keepers with smaller ponds I would suggest a pressurized pond filter from industry recognized manufacturers such Fishmate, Oase or Hozelock, as their pond keeping products are supplied with excellent warranties and have been designed to keep running costs to a minimum.

- They can be expensive to purchase and can be tricky to install. When installing a vortex filter it is important to choose a model that is correct for the size of the pump flow rate that you require. If you choose a model that is too small for the required pump flow rate then the water containing particulate matter will pass straight through to the next filtration stage. A bigger models has a longer retention time and therefore provides a much better opportunity for the solid waste to settle in the primary vortex chamber, where it can be easily removed.

Having said this if you compromise the health of you fish by using an inferior biofilter then you may wish that you had used a professional biofiltration system in the first place. Koi can be very expensive to replace and are susceptible to stress, unlike their hardier goldfish cousins.
